Thomas Randolph showed signs of peak form by finishing fourth in the recent U20 Midland Championships. With a negative split of 61/55, Tom ran 1:56 just missing out on a medal by a tenth of a second.
Given Tom’s 400m speed he should be able to run at least 1:52 once he puts in the aerobic work. (One formula suggests doubling your 400m time and adding 12 seconds – 400m time (50.4) -> 1:40.8 + 12 = 1:52.8.
Worcester Warriors Youth Player Josh Hale won the West Midlands Junior Boys 300m trials at the Alexander Stadium. He has raced over the distance three times and isn’t even a member of a club. What a fantastic performance all off a block of physical training!
Callum Abberley and Jack Simpson battled it out in the Staffordshire Schools 1500m in Stoke. A quick first 59 second lap by a Stoke athlete forced the lads to stay a stride or two behind the leader. With 400m to go (2:51), Callum pressed on with Jack in hot pursuit. At 1300m, 200m to go (3:27), Jack managed to get onto the inside and held Callum around the bend. Jack came off the bend with 100m to go and went into lane two slightly obstructing Callum. Callum putting the brakes on, regained his composure and took Jack with 30 metres to go in which should’ve been his first ever sub 4 minute performance.
1st Callum – 4:00.5, Jack 2nd in 4:01.4, 3rd Maddox 4:04 and 16th position 5:16.
Nevertheless, I’m delighted with the physical contact which will boost their development for when it sometimes gets dirty.
Callum will join Josh in this weekends Mason Trophy event at the Alexander Stadium.
