There were some excellent performances achieved last weekend at the Staffordshire Schools Athletics meeting in Stoke. First up, Thomas Randolph won the senior boys 800m with a time of 2:00 flat, showing glimpses that he’s nearly back to full fitness.
Jack Simpson and Callum Abberley were up next in the Inter Boys 1500m race, Jack already having secured the qualifying time (<4:07.00) for the English Schools Finals next month. His goal was to finish top two in order to make it through to next weekends Mason Trophy event. Callum however was under a lot of pressure to achieve the QT having only run 4:09 last month. His race plan was to consistently run 65-second laps in order to hopefully achieve qualification. Callum lead from the gun running a 61 second first lap, which practically could have destroyed his goal seeing as it was too fast. His second lap of 69-seconds took him through target race pace at 2:10. Running 3:17 (67-sec) at 1200m gave me some encouragement knowing that he always accelerates on the last lap. His final kick secured qualification with a new Personal Best time of 4:06.1. This was significant because not only did he lead from the gun and secure the time, but he overcame nervousness that will now make him a mentally stronger athlete. He is now ranked 25th in his age-category and the fourth fastest in the UK for his age, gaining 12 places up from last year.
Finally, Jack Simpson finished a further ten seconds behind Callum securing second position, which means both will be going to the English Schools Finals. Hurrah!
